GROCERY manager
As Grocery Manager you are responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations of the grocery department of our family-owned and operated market in Palo Alto, CA. This is a full-time supervisor / management position and you are responsible for leading the rest of the grocery team by adhering to company standards and regulations. This position reports to the General Manager and/or owners.
Depending on the season, managerial tasks such as ordering, team management, planning, etc. are expected to take 50%, and up to 80% of your time.
What you'll do: Responsibilities
Manage, supervise and provide leadership to up to 8 employees (may vary with seasonality and/or budgets)
Structure team for maximum efficiency and effectiveness
Build and develop team; you have full responsibility to hire/fire, onboard, train and develop staff
Resolving employee disputes, directing staff, assigning duties, and disciplining or firing staff as needed.
Own and develop weekly schedule for the department, including managing vacation and sick days
Regularly inspect the store to determine tasks that need to be completed by staff and delegate appropriately.
Monitor store inventory and update inventory logs. This includes managing store displays and stocking shelves and retail areas, or directing staff to do so.
Train team members on, and demonstrate strong customer service and "suggestive selling techniques".
Plan, assign and direct work to maximize team efficiency and effectiveness.
Be responsible for overall grocery department sales success.
Increase department sales based in line with store-wide goals.
Review sales and revenue reports to understand and grow sales, revenue, and profitability.
Regularly monitor department sales and develop and implement strategies to grow overall sales through all relevant levers, including but not limited to: efficient buying, product selection, merchandising, promotions, and effective inventory management.
Develop and implement merchandising and promotional plans
Be responsible for overall customer satisfaction with our grocery department.
Address complaints from customers and work with them to find satisfying resolutions.
Collaborate and work closely with other department leaders to ensure efficient operations of our market. This includes but is not limited to:
Plan and execute communication and strategic plans through actively engaging with other department management
Working with other departments to plan and execute promotions, sales and other events, including holidays, special events, etc.
Develop, improve and maintain all procedures for the grocery team to help them run the department efficiently and profitably, including but not limited to:
Inventory management, Product inspection and rotation, Out of stock items, etc.
Maintain a strong product selection that keep customers coming back - from variety to availability.
Own all product ordering and reordering. This includes deeply understanding our target market and proactively researching, seeking out and bringing in new products, producers and vendors that are in line with The Market’s core vision and customer base.
Interact with vendors (producers, distributors); Work closely with producers and distributors
Order and re-order merchandise on a daily basis
Own the process of taking in customer feedback and acting on it to ensure we’re bringing in the products that customers want and need.
Work side-by-side with the team as needed.
Stock shelves, racks, cases and bins with new merchandise; prepare food displays
Determined if inventory was sufficient for needs;
Provide excellent customer service, answering customers' questions about merchandise and advised customers on merchandise selection

You are a leader who manages daily department operations, address and resolve customer problems, and supervise staff.
Strong people management and leadership skills who has the ability to supervise, train, hire and fire employees.
Strong experience in grocery management, able to advocate for what the department and team needs while meeting market goals
Ability to work weekends, nights and holidays, however day-to-day availability must span across team’s morning and evening shifts
Personnel management – grocery managers are leaders who supervise, train, hire, and fire employees, which requires strong management skills
