As Meat Manager at The Market you will be responsible for overall operations of our Meat & Seafood Department, ensuring customer’s needs are met through high quality, efficient production, excellent customer service, overall organization, cleanliness and safety.

What you'll do: Responsibilities

Deliver excellent customer service

- Demonstrate strong product knowledge, and instill the same in all team members so we can continually educate and drive loyalty with customers

- Assisting customers with questions, ensuring their full satisfaction

- Engage in suggestive selling and instill the same in all team members to drive customer education, engagement and increased sales

- Manage all special orders from customers, as well as all customer feedback and escalations to drive loyalty and long-term departmental success

Ensure smooth, efficient and safe department operations

- Follow and comply with all organic standards procedures as they related to cutting, preparing, displaying and storing meat products.

- Ensure all health and Safety codes are adhered to in order to ensure safe meat products.

- Ensure all work and storage areas are always clean, organized and safe

- Oversee quality, ensuring every food product is sold to standards.

- Develop, maintain department opening and closing procedures, and ensure teams’ adherence to them

- Maintain and monitor the use of temperature, production, spoilage, and department transfer logs

- Work hand-in-hand with the team to complete the day’s work, as needed 

- Resolve conflicts through effective communication with customers and direct reports

- Schedule. Manage schedule to ensure department coverage within budget guidelines; oversee team breaks and hours to ensure compliance with policy and labor laws

- Department SOPs. Set up, deploy and maintain proper procedures to keep the department running smoothly, efficiently and in an organized fashion

- Vendors. Manage vendor relationships for the department. Order, receive, store, prepare and display fresh and frozen meat products to company guidelines 

- Ensure and help hold team accountable on complying with all safety, health and Weights and Measures regulations.

Grow department sales and profits 

- Proactively take steps to maximize sales and profits through monitoring labor costs and reduce losses due to shrink, damage and pilferage; Identifying and implementing opportunities to grow sales for the department, including suggestive selling, seasonal merchandising, sampling, promotions, etc.

- Coach all meat employees the importance of of the cost of meat products

- Develop and push weekly featured or ad items

- Maximize customer satisfaction and sales by overseeing all production, displays and merchandising

- Ensure a fresh, well-stocked and appealing displays, accurate signage and pricing in the department

- Support store programs by supporting sales, promotions and events for the department

- Curate our product selection to differentiate THE MARKET in line with what customers want

- Minimize waste by utilizing older product in a timely manner into production Deli/Kitchen/Catering.

Mentor, develop and grow team members to their maximum potential

- Create a positive, customer-focused work environment and help cultivate a positive company culture

- Be responsible for all training - of new (and existing) team members - training, developing, and holding the team accountable through proper execution of all necessary corrective action.

- Provide leadership and day-to-day management and motivation of team, including setting clear expectations, delivering ongoing feedback and holding the team accountable

- Hiring, disciplining, and terminating employees in line with our policies and labor law


Work with upper management and peers, through effective communication and collaboration


Who you are: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Must have skill and leadership in a high volume, fast paced food service environment 

- Must be available to work weekends and evenings, as needed

- Knowledge and passion for meat 

- Proven skill and leadership qualities, including knowledge of general butchery practices and procedures

- Strong management skills, dealing with food, and also guiding the work of others

- High attention to detail, maintaining quality and operations across food products, costs, safety, etc.

- Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and can manage your time and effort effectively, as well as that of others 

- Highly organized, keeping work schedules, shipments, cleaning schedules and more 

- You’re a problem solver who can deal with and resolve conflict and challenges with team members, customers and vendors. Being able to come up with a solution quickly is a needed skill.

- You’re able to deliver information in a clear and respectable manner to fellow team members and customers

- You have a strong work ethic and integrity

- You lead by example and consistently display behaviors and skills that set a standard and model for others

- You work effectively with not only your own team but with fellow department managers for the overall success of the market  

- You are able to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed\

- Knowledge of proper knife-handling skills

-Basic proficiency with computer applications and programs including email, Google Drive, and operations related applications a plus


Desired work experience

  • At least 5 years of meat and fish prep and selling experience

  • Experience managing a team

  • Customer service focus
